Obituary for Wanda Lee Stone

Wanda Lee Higginbotham Stone of Buffalo, Putnam County, passed away on Thursday, May 2, 2019 at her home following a long illness. She would have been 88 years of age on May 18th.

Wanda was the only child of the late Charles Lee and Ida Mae Allen Higginbotham. Her early years were spent in Kanawha City where her father owned a shoe repair shop. After his untimely death when Wanda was only 6 years old, she and her mother moved to their ancestral home on Jim Ridge, Putnam County. They relocated to Dunbar during Wanda’s teenage years and she graduated from Dunbar High School in 1949. Following graduation Wanda worked candy counter retail sales at the former S.S. Kresge Department Store in downtown Charleston.

On December 22, 1952 Wanda married Donald Ray Stone and in 1954 the couple bought their first home in Buffalo. Don passed away on May 10, 1996. Wanda continued to live on the same property that she and Don first purchased, and this year she reached the milestone of 65 years as a Buffalo resident.

However Wanda did enjoy traveling, seeing new sights and meeting new people. Before her health declined, she was a frequent cruise line traveler to Alaska, the Caribbean, Mexico and Central America, often accompanied by her granddaughter. She also visited Canada and journeyed throughout the Midwestern, Eastern, and Southern United States.

Wanda was a Christian and for many years a member of the Midway United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School and directed and taught Vacation Bible School. More recently she attended the Buffalo Presbyterian Church.

Wanda had a soft heart for animals and was known informally around Buffalo as the “catwoman” for adopting and caring for stray cats. She collected porcelain and ceramic angel figurines. Her periodic yard sales with her good friend, Linda Whittington, were well-known throughout the area for their quality second-hand merchandise.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Wanda was preceded in death by an infant son, Larry Ray Stone, and by a cousin, Maxine Painter, who was like the sister she never had.

Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Gary Hawkins of Elkview; her granddaughter and the light of her life, Elizabeth Lee “Lisa” Hawkins of Washington, DC; a special nephew and niece, Michael and Colleen Stone of Robertsburg; a host of cousins and other extended family and friends; and her beloved cat Bushy. She is also survived by Rick and Kay Casto of Buffalo, whom she loved dearly like a son and daughter-in-law.

Sincere thanks to Chris Burgess and her family for the devoted care they gave to Wanda throughout the last eight months of her life.

Funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, May 11th, at Raynes Funeral Home, 20072 Charleston Road, Buffalo with Rev. Randy Parsons officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Zion Cemetery, Jim Ridge. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, May 10th, and 1 hour before the service on Saturday.

Flowers are welcome, although the family encourages memorial donations to the Gabriel Project of WV, PO Box 4663, Charleston, WV 25364, or online at The Gabriel Project is a nonprofit organization providing cribs, car seats, formula and other essential baby items to low-income families in 27 WV counties.
