Obituary for Karen Maxine Higginbotham

Karen Maxine Higginbotham, 80, of Eleanor passed away Friday, April 26, 2019 at CAMC General following a long illness. She was a cheerleader at GW Junior High in Eleanor and 1956 graduate of Poca High School. She retired from Putnam County Schools and was a District Manager for former Congressman Mick Staton. Karen was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Eleanor. She took part in various activities over the years including being in charge of the nursery, helping with AWANA and the Baptist Youth Fellowship. She was a member of the Putnam County Federation of Republican Women, former chairwoman of the Putnam County Republican Executive Committee, Republican Committeewoman for Buffalo Union District and former president of the Putnam County Republican Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents Cleo and Dorothy Smalley; grandparents, Oscar and Edna Witt and sister Janet Absten.

Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Robert L. “Deak” Higginbotham; sons, Mark Higginbotham of Teays Valley and Jeff (Lisa) Higginbotham of Cary NC; daughter, Jill (Damon) Moles of Charleston; brothers, Chester (Ruth) Smalley of South Charleston and Dexter (Brenda) Smalley of Cross Lanes; grandsons, Andrew (Lisa) Garrison and Jeremy Moles (Courtney Perdue); granddaughter, Lily Higginbotham, step granddaughter, Porsha (Ryan) Jeffrey; great- grandson, Riley Garrison; great- granddaughter, Savannah Garrison; step great-granddaughters, Lilly and Olivia Jeffrey. Karen was “Aunt Mac” to seven niece and nephews. She is also survived by her aunt, Faye Fisher and uncle, Orphie Witt along with her “third son” Clemens Elkins.

Flowers are welcome but the family suggest memorial contributions be made to the First Baptist Church of Eleanor Youth Group.

Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday April 30, 2019 at First Baptist Church of Eleanor with Pastor David Panaro Jr. and Pastor Greg Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Haven of Rest Memory Gardens, Red House. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church of Eleanor.
